Sometimes the best way you can take care of yourself is by opening a good book. While our lives are full of difficult conversations, self reflection, and community action, we’d like to take this moment to talk about some books we’re excited about.
We understand that not everyone has the time, energy, or want to read right now. Our hearts are with you all, and these stories will wait patiently for when you’re ready to join them.
These are some June releases that we are interested in. Comment below to add your own recommendations. We would love to hear what you are excited about!
Byron’s Picks
A Burning ~ Megha Majumdar (Release Date June 2, 2020)
This book is set in India. It contains three interlocking stories. That’s all I know about the content of this novel. However, it appeared in every single “Best of the Month” list I looked at. It is also an Amazon “Featured Debut.” Authors that I admire and respect (including Yaa Gyasi) have praised it. That was enough for me to buy it!
Ardis’s Picks
Hella ~ David Gerrold (Release Date June 16, 2020)
There’s something about animals that are the wrong size that really captivates me. I have a deep, abiding love for megafauna, and of course not too long ago I was completely taken in by the promise of teensy animals in The Little Animals (which I reviewed back in April).
Gerrold’s Hella takes this to a whole new level, promising an entire world populated by giant-sized trees, herds of enormous dinosaurs, and even extreme weather on a scale to topple mountains. Add colonists from a distant Earth and a sprinkle of secrecy, and I am all in.
The Empire of Gold ~ S. A. Chakraborty (Release Date June 30, 2020)
I have been waiting for this book since approximately 10 pages into The Kingdom of Copper and I am so thrilled to finally see the conclusion of the Daevabad Trilogy, which first captivated my attention in late 2017. If you aren’t already on the Chakraborty train, you definitely still have time to read the first two books before this one is released. Check out my review of the first book, The City of Brass, here and join me in eager anticipation.
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water ~ Zen Cho (Release Date June 23, 2020)
I don’t know a lot about this book, and it first piqued my interest solely based on the sterling reputation of its author and one glowing recommendation from one of my absolute favorites – Ken Liu.
“Fantastic, defiant, utterly brilliant.” ―Ken Liu
